VAT calculator Netherlands: incl. and excl. VAT
Enter an amount and choose whether the VAT is already in it. You see the amount without VAT, the VAT itself and the total.
The VAT is €21.00.
| Amount excluding VAT | €100.00 |
|---|---|
| VAT (21%) | €21.00 |
| Amount including VAT | €121.00 |
How to calculate VAT
| You know | You want | Formula at 21% |
|---|---|---|
| Amount excluding VAT | The VAT | amount × 0.21 |
| Amount excluding VAT | Amount including VAT | amount × 1.21 |
| Amount including VAT | Amount excluding VAT | amount ÷ 1.21 |
| Amount including VAT | The VAT | amount ÷ 121 × 21 |
A common mistake: taking 21% off an amount that includes VAT. 21% of €121.00 is €25.41, but it holds €21.00 of VAT. So always divide by 1.21.
Which rate applies?
- 21% is the standard rate. It applies to most services and products, such as consultancy, design, software and repairs.
- 9% applies to food, drinks without alcohol, books and some labour-intensive services, such as hairdressers.
- 0% mainly applies to export outside the EU and to supplies to businesses in other EU countries.
If you are unsure about the rate for a product or service, check the VAT table of the Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst).
Questions
How do I get the VAT back out of an amount that includes VAT?
Divide the amount by 1.21 for the amount without VAT. The difference is the VAT. At 9% you divide by 1.09.
Do I round the VAT per line or per invoice?
Both are allowed, as long as you do it consistently. Round to whole cents.
Is what I enter stored?
